The History of Pacific Coast Dream Machines
The Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show is an annual vintage vehicle exhibition held every spring at Half Moon Bay Airport on the Northern California coast. Founded in the early 1990s, the show features over 2,000 classic cars, vintage aircraft, antique motorcycles, boats, tractors, and steam-powered machines displayed on the airport tarmac. All proceeds benefit the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, a nonprofit serving frail, elderly, and disabled adults in the Half Moon Bay community.
Since 1992, the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show has brought together vintage vehicle enthusiasts, families, and curious onlookers at Half Moon Bay Airport for a day unlike any other on the California coast.
How It All Began
What started as a modest gathering of classic car owners on the tarmac of a small coastal airport has grown into one of Northern California's premier events. The show was founded with a simple mission: celebrate mechanical ingenuity while supporting the local community. In those early years, a handful of car collectors parked their prized vehicles on the runway and invited friends and neighbors to come take a look. Word spread quickly along the coastside, and within a few years the show had outgrown its humble beginnings.
By the late 1990s, Dream Machines had become a fixture on the Bay Area events calendar. The airport setting gave the show a character that no parking lot or fairground could match — the open tarmac, the ocean breeze, and the occasional small plane taxiing past a row of polished Corvettes created a scene unlike anything else in Northern California.
More Than Just Cars
While classic automobiles remain at the heart of the show, Dream Machines has always been about more than just cars. Over the years, the event has expanded to include an extraordinary variety of attractions:
- Vintage Aircraft — from WWII warbirds to early biplanes
- Antique Motorcycles — spanning decades of two-wheeled engineering
- Classic Boats — beautiful wooden craft and vintage speedboats
- Antique Tractors — the machines that built the American heartland
- Steam Engines & Early Gas Engines — where it all began
This variety is what earned Dream Machines the nickname "The Coolest Show on Earth." On any given year, you might find a 1930s biplane parked next to a gleaming hot rod, a steam tractor idling beside a vintage military Jeep, or a hand-built motorcycle drawing a crowd three rows deep.
Live Music and Entertainment
The show is also known for its live music performances, which have featured well-known artists and local bands performing throughout the day on the main stage. Combined with food vendors, a dedicated kids' zone, and the dramatic coastal setting, the event offers a full day of entertainment for every member of the family.
A Tradition of Giving Back
Every year, proceeds from the Dream Machines Show benefit the Coastside Adult Day Health Center, which has served frail, elderly, and disabled adults in the Half Moon Bay community for over 40 years. This tradition of giving back has been part of the show's DNA since the very beginning, making every ticket purchased a contribution to a vital local cause.
Looking Ahead
As we prepare for another year at Half Moon Bay Airport, the spirit of Dream Machines remains the same: a celebration of the machines that move us, the people who built them, and the community that comes together to appreciate them.
We look forward to seeing you at the show.
